?️ Overview
Embark on an exhilarating 3-hour guided hike through the lush tropical terrain near Liberia, Costa Rica, to reach the hidden gem: La Leona Waterfall. This adventure offers a blend of forest trails, river crossings, and canyon exploration culminating in a stunning turquoise waterfall nestled in rocky cliffs.
Traverse forested paths and rugged terrain under the watchful presence of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano.
Navigate caves and climb small rock formations and ladders to reach the canyon.
Swim through a narrow river canyon (approximately 25 m / 82 ft) with guide assistance and life jackets.
Arrive at the secret La Leona Waterfall, known for its blue-turquoise water, colored by volcanic minerals.
Enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear pool beneath the waterfall and take in the natural beauty of the surroundings.
Your adventure begins in Curubandé (just outside Liberia), where you’ll meet your guide and hop into a 4×4 vehicle for a short drive to the trailhead. From there, you’ll hike roughly 2 km through shady forest, crossing rivers along the way — ropes help you maintain balance in the water crossings. As you progress, you’ll climb ladders and navigate rock formations, then enter a canyon via a rope-assisted section to reach La Leona Waterfall. The waterfall is tucked into a narrow gorge, its waters glowing a remarkable turquoise-blue due to volcanic minerals. You'll have time to swim, relax in the pool, and soak up the scenery before hiking back along the same route.
